We have all known that the US government has been engaging in torture for a while, and that part of that program was "waterboarding." It might seem like old news at this point, but it is remarkable that a former high level intelligence official (as high as the get, in fact) has admitted to the practice publicly:
The remarks by former Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte in an interview with National Journal magazine come as senators are expected Wednesday to grill Attorney General Michael Mukasey on a promised review of the legality of interrogation methods.
Asked by the magazine if debate over U.S. counterterrorism techniques was hampering its effort in a "war of ideas," Negroponte said, "We've taken steps to address the issue of interrogations, for instance, and waterboarding has not been used in years."
Oh well then, that is okay. They promise to have stopped, and now we will be winning the hearts and minds of the Arab and Muslim world.
Smells like a load of blackwhite to me.
Didn't he just admit to a war crime? Negroponte may not longer be the Director of Intelligence, but he is still in government. He is currently a deputy of the Department of State. We put one of the torture guys in charge of our diplomacy. What kind of message does that send?
Unfortunately the American political system does not recognize basic human rights. So the message will no doubt continue.
This administration only changes its hideous policies until after they are
shamed into it. They're moral cockroaches, skittering away when the light
is shone.
