Time to Fight for Healthcare for Poor Kids

posted Thursday, 4 October 2007

As expected, Bush vetoed the expansion of a wildly popular health care program for children living in low income households.  The administration is signaling that it is willing to bargain with Congress on the bill; but there is a lot of pressure on the US legislature to just override this disgusting move to pander to the conservative base:

But House Democratic leaders signaled they are not yet ready to bargain. They have delayed until Oct. 18 a vote to override the veto, in hopes that a grass-roots campaign by health-policy advocates and a barrage of television and radio advertisements will win over the 15 or so Republicans they will need to overcome Bush's opposition.

That possibility is entirely possible given that Bush has recently shown just how isolated and downright mean he is on this topic:

Responding to a question about the growing number of uninsured Americans, President George W. Bush observed: "No one goes without health care in America. After all, you just go to an emergency room.''

Nice.

The biggest fear that the Bushies and the shrink-government-to-destroy-it crowd have with expanding this program is that it will work.  It is already very popular, and a wide majority of Americans support its expansion.  Their fear is that people just might get the idea that a national singlepayer health care system is best thing for everyone (putting aside the negligible minority that makes money off of a system that has 46 million plus uninsured who are only able to "just go to an emergency room").  They are afraid that people might actually demand that their government work for them, rather than for moneyed interests.

It will work as well as it does in Cuba. If you look at the Walter Reed mess, Medicare, Airport security, FBI screw-ups, Etc. What the hell reccomends these fools to now run Healthcare!!!!

You are mistaking government funded aka: single payer, with government run hospitals doctors ect. It wouldn't wipe out the market in health care, just institute price controls for it. So the government would negotiate with HC providers for price, but HC providers would operate on their own within reasonable standards.

Also the "screw-ups" you mention as a result of government healthcare already occur, so Americans spend more for healthcare, but get a worse "product." Meanwhile single payer systems in other countries provide better care.
